Why your Google ranking doesn't carry over

Ranking on Google does not put you in AI answers, and the gap is wider than most business owners expect.

When researchers ran fifteen thousand questions through the main AI assistants, only about one in eight of the pages those assistants cited also ranked in Google’s top ten for the same question. For ChatGPT it was closer to one in fifteen. Google’s own AI Overviews stay nearer to their search results, but even there the overlap has been falling steadily rather than rising.

Two things follow. A business sitting at the top of Google can be completely absent when someone asks an AI the same question in plain English. And a page that ranks nowhere in particular can be the source an AI quotes, because it happened to answer the question cleanly.

There’s a second change underneath that one. A Google results page gives ten links and a scroll. An AI answer gives four or five sources and a paragraph that has already made the recommendation. There is no page two to be on.

What AI SEO covers

Five things, and they run every month rather than once at the start.

Where you stand now

We run the questions your buyers actually ask, across ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews first, then Gemini and Perplexity. We check the full sentence somebody types when they’re ready to buy.

Consistency where you appear

AI systems build a picture of a business from every place it’s mentioned, and they notice when those places disagree. Matching your description, address and services across your site, your Google profile and the directories is unglamorous, but it’s important.

Pages written to be quoted

An AI pulls a sentence, not a page. That means answering the question in the first line under each heading, publishing prices as figures rather than “contact us”, and writing specifics an answer can use. Vague pages don’t get cited because there’s nothing in them to cite.

Structured data

Schema tells a machine what your business is, where it works and what it sells, without it having to infer any of that from your layout. Microsoft has confirmed publicly that it helps their models read a page. It’s part of the job, not the whole job.

Third-party mentions

Models lean heavily on sources that aren’t yours: directories, review sites, industry listings, anywhere your category gets discussed. Being described accurately in those places is a large part of whether you appear, and it’s the part that takes longest.

What's not included

Nobody can promise a particular AI will name you for a particular question, and the ones who do are hoping you won’t check.

No paid placement, no publishing forty thin articles a month to catch AI attention, and no reselling you a monitoring tool subscription at a markup. We use those tools where they help, but you’re paying for the work.

How it fits with your SEO

AI search visibility is part of the SEO work, not a separate product. It’s included in every package at no extra cost.

We do it that way because the two jobs share most of their inputs. The consistency work, the structured data, the clear pages and the third-party mentions all feed both. Selling them separately would mean either doing the same work twice or explaining why the cheaper version leaves out the parts that make it work.

What it doesn’t mean is that AI replaces search. Google still sends most of the traffic to most small businesses, and anyone telling you to stop doing SEO because of AI is guessing. You now need to show up in both, and the work overlaps enough that doing both isn’t twice the job.

Standard package, £700/month. On-page, local, content and technical SEO, with AI search visibility included.

AI visibility audits

If you already have an SEO provider and just want to know where you stand, we run a standalone AI visibility audit for £400.

You get your buying questions run across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity, what each one currently says about you, who gets recommended instead and the reason they’re being picked, every inconsistency in how your business is described online, and a prioritised fix list. Hand it to whoever does your SEO, or give it to us and the £400 comes off your first month.

How it gets measured

Citations and mentions, not rankings. There’s no position one in an AI answer.

Each month you get the same set of buying questions run across the platforms, with what changed since last time: where you’re named now and weren’t before, where a competitor is named instead, and which of your pages got cited. Where a platform gives usable referral data you get that too, though it’s still patchy and we won’t dress it up as more than it is.

We won’t promise a number of citations. These systems aren’t deterministic, and the same question asked twice can return different sources. What we can show you is direction over months, which is the only honest unit of measurement anyone has here.

Who this isn't for

If your business is doing well on Google and no customer has ever mentioned ChatGPT to you, it’s reasonable to wait.

We’d rather you spent the £700 on the SEO that’s already working than on being early. The reason to start now is if your buyers are the kind of people who ask an AI before they ask anyone else.

And if you need proof to justify it next quarter, this will frustrate you. The measurement is very new, the platforms change their answers without warning, and we’d rather be honest about it.

Who does the work

Future Faced is one person, Daniel Jay Lyle. You work directly with me from the first call onwards, and the person who answers your first email is the person running your questions through ChatGPT and reading the results.

That matters more here than on most services, because this work is new enough that a lot of what’s sold as AI SEO is a junior running a tool subscription and forwarding you the PDF.

If you’d rather have account managers and a wider team behind the invoice, a larger agency will suit you better, and I’ll tell you that on the first call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions we get about AI SEO:

What is AI SEO?

AI SEO is the work of getting your business named and cited in AI-generated answers, on ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and the rest. It also goes by GEO (generative engine optimisation), AEO (answer engine optimisation) and AI visibility. Confusingly, some people use “AI SEO” to mean using AI tools to write SEO content, which is a different job and not what we do here.

Yes, in the sense that what makes a business appear in AI answers is known and can be worked on: consistent information everywhere you’re mentioned, pages that answer questions directly, structured data and third-party coverage. What nobody can do is guarantee a particular AI will name you for a particular question, because these systems aren’t deterministic and the same question can return different sources twice in a row.

Most of the underlying work is shared, which is why it’s included rather than sold separately. What differs is the target. SEO aims at a ranked list of ten links. AI SEO aims at being one of the four or five sources an answer gets built from, which rewards direct answers and consistent facts more than it rewards keywords.

Yes, in all of them, at no extra cost. Packages start at £700/month. The only separate price is the £400 one-off audit, for businesses that already have an SEO provider and want to know where they stand.

By citations and mentions rather than rankings, because AI answers don’t have positions. Each month we run the same set of buying questions across the platforms and report where you’re named, where a competitor is named instead, and which of your pages got cited.
